Brisbane City Council’s Green Heart Fair is back for its 10th birthday celebrations at Carindale Recreation Reserve on Sunday 8 September.
Brisbane’s biggest sustainable living festival will have all-day free workshops and displays, artisan markets, kids’ entertainment, the Brisbane Billycart Championships and 3,000 free native plants for Brisbane residents.
Here’s what you can expect to help you live a more eco-friendly life!
Love Food Hate Waste
Did you know that 24% of the average Brisbane bin consists of food waste?
Cleanaway’s Waste Zone is trying to change that with Love Food Hate Waste. Cooking demonstrations with simple tricks will transform the way you plan, shop and eat, helping you to save up to thousands of dollars every year.
Dominique Rizzo, one of Queensland’s leading female chefs, will show you how to make the most of your herbs to save money and gain flavour. She will be joined by MasterChef Australia’s 2015 runner-up, Georgia Barnes, who will help you turn leftovers into healthy and delicious kid-friendly meals.
Sam and Rachel Thaiday will also be showing off their culinary skills, cooking up low waste family meals.
Feeling pekish after all these cooking demonstrations? Head along to one of our many food trucks and grab a bite to eat (there will be plenty of delicious options for vegan and gluten free foodies).
Green Home Zone
The Green Home Zone has a jam-packed program with Brisbane’s best sustainability experts to help you live an eco-friendly life and lower your impact on the environment.
Learn more about zero waste living from Biome Eco Stores’ founder Tracey Bailey. Plus, Biome will have a stall on the day for you to pick up all your eco essentials.
Want to find out how to turn your garden into a pollinated oasis full of native plants and your own eggs?
Bee One Third will take you through the basics of keeping bees, Claire Bickle will give you the rundown on backyard chooks, and Annette McFarlane will inspire you to look after the free native plants you grabbed at the fair.
Plus, they’ll all be around to answer any questions you may have about bees / chooks / plants at their stalls!
Have you ever tried making your own furniture or composting? Learn how to do both from Mallow Sustainability. Dickson Lee will give you all the advice you need for creating nutrient-rich compost. He’ll also show you how you can build simple furniture with reclaimed timber.
Then move into the kitchen with Valerie Pearson, who will demonstrate how to make yoghurt, kefir and sugar-free jam – delicious!
What else is on at Council’s Green Heart Fair?
As well as these inspiring speakers, the fair will also have displays from over 100 leading sustainability organisations and experts.
